When you set up a video sharing page or hub with Vidyard, you have the option to customize the domain name for the page where your video(s) will be shared.
By default, the 2 Vidyard-hosted domain options (share.vidyard.com
and *.hubs.vidyard.com
) use HTTPS. This ensures that the connection between Vidyard's server and your viewers' web browser uses TLS to encrypt the transfer of data. HTTPS is also a visual cue to that indicates to visitors that your webpage is secure and trusted.
If you choose to use a custom CNAME for your domain, there are additional steps required in order to use HTTPS.
Domain name options for sharing pages and video hubs | Uses HTTPS? |
Vidyard's default subdomain | share.vidyard.com (uses HTTPS) |
A unique Vidyard subdomain | *.hubs.vidyard.com (uses HTTPS) |
A custom domain name (CNAME) | Use a custom domain that you've created in your DNS (requires additional set up for HTTPS) |
Step 1: obtain a certificate signing request (CSR) from Vidyard
Unless you already have a wildcard certificate, you'll first need to ask Vidyard Support to generate a certificate signing request (CSR). The CSR is what you'll use to ask your Certificate Authority (CA) to create and sign a certificate for your chosen CNAME.
Note: if you do not have a Certificate Authority, here are several common ones that you can use: GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Comodo, DigiCert, GlobalSign.
- Contact Vidyard Support with the following information to obtain a CSR. Indicate whether you want to set up HTTPS for a sharing page or video hub.
Country Name (2 letter code) [example - AU]: State or Province Name (full name): Locality Name (eg, city or town): Organization Name (eg, company name): Organizational Unit Name (eg, section): Common Name (FQDN or CNAME. eg, videos.yourcompany.com): Email Address:
OPTIONAL: Challenge password: - Once generated, a Support Specialist will then provide you with the
.csr
file via Box, a secure file sharing service - Provide your certificate authority with the
.csr
file
Step 2: return the signed certificate from your CA back to Vidyard
Your certificate authority will use the CSR provided by Vidyard to create and sign a certificate for your chosen CNAME. They will likely return the certificate to you along with a chain of other certificates.
- Provide the certificate chain from your CA back to the Vidyard Support Specialist
- We will then install the certificate on our server and then provide you with a unique URL (sometimes called a "target name")
- In your DNS, point your CNAME record at the target name URL
- When complete, let your Vidyard Support Specialist know so that we can then enable HTTPS for your sharing page or hub
What to do when your certificate expires
Certificates expire after a particular length of time. When your certificate expires, you will need to provide a new certificate for Vidyard to upload.
The process to renew your certificate will differ depending on how it was originally set up.
Scenario |
Steps to update your certificate |
If Vidyard originally provided you with a CSR... |
Because we securely store and encrypt your CA's corresponding private key on Vidyard's server, it cannot be re-used with a renewed certificate. You will need to request a new CSR from Vidyard, then use it to obtain a new signed certificate from your CA. |
If you provided Vidyard with a wildcard certificate... |
Send your updated certificate and private key to Vidyard via a secure method of delivery. |
