How to troubleshoot issues with sharing your screen
Are you having trouble recording your screen with Vidyard? Find your issue below, along with helpful steps on how to resolve it.
Why is recording blocked on some pages with the Vidyard browser extension?
Have you ever opened a new tab to record with the Vidyard browser extension only to find that recording is blocked? You probably encountered a message in the extension that reads:
"Recording Blocked -- Your browser doesn't allow recording on this page, please try a different one."
Recording is blocked on some pages in Chrome or Edge (like chrome://newtab or chrome://settings) because they aren't real webpages; they're part of the Chrome or Edge application.
Application-based pages don't have any code to display, so Vidyard can't run the code that allows you to record videos on these pages.
This can also occur if the website you're on has chosen to block recording from a browser extension. If this is the case, you may be unable to record on that webpage.
How to fix it
If you're trying to record in a Chrome or Edge settings page, instead open the browser extension and start your recording on any URL-based page, for example vidyard.com or linkedin.com.
If the website has blocked recording, you will be unable to record with the Vidyard extension unless the site unblocks recording.
Why didn't my recording capture the audio on my screen?
You've just finished recording your screen with the browser extension, but you notice that your Vidyard video doesn't include the audio from a short clip you played during the recording.
When you're choosing a screen to record, the option to share that screen's audio has to be enabled.
How to fix it
When you're selecting a tab, window, or screen to share from the browser extension, you'll notice a toggle at the bottom labeled "Also share system audio". You need to ensure this is enabled to capture audio from your computer in your recording. You can learn more by reading our article on capturing system or browser audio.
I'm trying to use Vidyard on my Mac, but my screen recording won't start
You may notice that when you try to start a screen recording with Vidyard, the 3-second countdown to begin the screen capture does not appear, and the recording never starts.
With the release of macOS Catalina (and all subsequent OS versions), Apple has added a new privacy setting that requires you to specify which apps can record video. Certain updates from your browser or Apple can also require you to reconfirm specific permissions, such as Screen Recording.
How to fix it
Enter your system settings, and make sure screen recording is enabled.
What program you need to enable will depend on where you're recording. If you're using the browser extension, enable screen recording for your browser (Chrome or Edge). If you're using the desktop app, it will have its own option to enable.
Once you've completed these steps and restarted Chrome, try starting your recording again.
- Open System Preferences,
- Select Security & Privacy > Screen Recording
- Select the lock (🔒 ) in the bottom corner in order to make changes
- Check the box next to the app you're using (browser, Vidyard desktop app) to allow screen recordings.
- If the box is already checked in your browser, you may be experiencing a problem with your browser version. To fix, uncheck Google Chrome/Microsoft Edge > Quit & Reopen > check the box again > Quit & Reopen
