How to use video descriptions
Descriptions help you to add context to a video and tell others (both human and non-human) what your video is all about.
Any avatar video, uploaded video, or video recorded in Vidyard using Vidyard's browser extension, or in apps like Gmail, Outlook, and more, will have descriptions automatically generated based on the video's content.
Use descriptions to:
- Let viewers know what your video is about and pique their interest
- Help search engines like Google (robots) understand what your video is about and improve your ranking in search results
To add or edit your video descriptions, use the steps below.
How to edit a video's description
- Select a video from your library to open the edit page
- Enter a description in the text field underneath your video
- Your description is saved automatically as soon as you click away from the text field
The description field has a character limit of 5000. Angled brackets (either < or >) are not supported.
Frequently asked questions
How do automated descriptions work?
When you create an avatar video, upload a video, or record a video*, we'll automatically give you a clear description based on your video's content. Visit the video's edit page to view or edit your description.
Please note that to generate automatic descriptions, your video must be at least 5 seconds long and contain at least 100 characters-worth of audio.
Automated descriptions are only available to Free accounts that have opted in to the additional terms in their account settings. Automated descriptions will not be available to paid accounts that have opted out of AI features.
*Automated titles are currently not supported when recording on the Vidyard desktop app.
Where does my video description appear?
A description helps viewers decide whether they want to watch your video. It also makes your video more discoverable on the web, helping search engines like Google understand what it's about, improve its ranking in search results, and make it more digestible for AI models to answer questions with.
Viewers can see your video description in the following places:
- Internet search results - Appears if you've embedded your video on a public webpage, or if you've enabled the Search Engine Indexing setting on your sharing page.
- In a Vidyard Video Hub - Appears next to a video when added to a Video Hub.
- On your Vidyard sharing page - Appears if the sharing page has the Show Description setting enabled.
- On YouTube - Appears in the YouTube description when you share a Vidyard video.
- In the metadata of a page with an embedded video - If you have the SEO Metatags feature enabled.
